Build a Community

In the worlds current state, we are all realizing just how important our communities are. Build your own community out of collage materials so you can have a piece of your larger world in your home with you!

There are many contemporary artists that create magical miniature sets such as Tatsuya Tanaka. Check out his instagram to see his incredible work and get inspired! And check out this article that Tanaka was featured in that mentions several other artists that work on a tiny scale.

You can create the community you are apart of (your class room, your family home, your bedroom, your neighborhood) or you can create your dream community (a castle on a hill, an under-water village, etc.)! I created my ideal community: the perfect blend of of city and nature. Check out my final creation below!

Suggested materials:

-Scissors

-Tape (or glue stick)

-Cardboard jewelry box (or any small box you can find with a lip of about an inch) for your base! Open up the jewelry box and use either the top or bottom as your base. You will tape or glue your collage materials right onto the bottom and lip of the box to build your community.

-Construction paper (to cut out any shape you want that you can’t quite find in your magazines or newspapers)

-Magazines and/or newspapers (or any other collage material you have lying around; this will be your main decorative material so cut out anything your eye is drawn to!)

-Markers (for your finishing touches/to add more detail! Maybe you want a face on your clouds or some cobblestones on your road. Use your markers to add those final details.)

Happy Making!

My creation! Tip to have your collage materials to stand up (like my biker): Pinch and fold the bottom section and then tape or glue down that folded area onto your base.
